Students in the mixed advanced classes chose world problems to do a research based artwork about. Here are some of the amazing results:
Komal gave a powerful presentation about violence against women, specifically in South Asia. Here is an excerpt of her writings:
Violence Against Women in South Asia- by Komal S
"Violence against women is prevalent in every corner of the world; from the slums of Delhi to the high-rises in New York City. While humanity’s ultimate goal must be to eradicate all forms of inequality between men and women, the severity of the violence in South Asia is especially concerning, and demands immediate attention from prominent organizations and powerful political figures. The extent to which the disparities exist in said region are far greater than that of the West, and thus require a multitude of preventative measures as well as greater funding in order to reverse backwards mindsets that have resulted in the abuse and death of tens of thousands of women."
Komal went on to suggest several solutions to the problem and drew these beautiful portraits of two women who were murdered because of the high levels of violence against women. Her presentation was very thoughtful and thought-provoking.
Here is her artwork reflection:
"The artworks I created to represent this pressing issue are a pair of portraits, both depicting two victims of GBV. Jyoti Singh Pandey was a 23 year old medical student in New Delhi, who was brutally gang raped and thrown out of a moving bus, left to die in the winter of 2012. Her case was one of the most horrific India had ever seen, sparking protests all throughout India and heavy media coverage throughout the world. Nicknamed Nirbhaya (fearless), she became and still stands to this date as a symbol for the women’s enduring fight for equality in India. Nusrat Rafi’s case was far more recent. Less than a month ago, she went to her local police in Feni, Bangladesh, to report a case of sexual harassment against her school principal. The principal was arrested, and shortly thereafter, mobs gathered, demanding his release. As Nusrat went to school to give her final exam, she was tricked into going on the roof, where she was doused in gasoline and lit on fire for reporting her assault. She passed away hours after reaching the hospital, burns covering 80% of her body. Her death, like Jyoti’s, sparked widespread outrage throughout surrounding nations, with protests and vigils held in her memory. I chose to represent these two women in my artwork because their stories mean a lot to me personally, and have the kind of impact that I want to deliver through the pieces. There were a lot of choices that needed to be made with the portraits, from the words and the lettering to the faces themselves. I chose to keep their features in simple black pen with varying thickness, the greatest emphasis falling on the eyes and the lips. I colored in the lips because I thought it would add a little dimension and life to the portraits that simple black and white couldn’t provide. Additionally, as I wanted to make sure that the faces were the main focus of the artwork, I wrote their names and lifespans in a very simple black font. Lastly, I added in words along their silhouettes that hinted at their causes of death, what they endured, but most importantly, the effect their lives had. While their stories are different, I included change as a commonality in both of their portraits, because I feel that it is vital that we do not let their deaths go in vain. Both Jyoti and Nusrat lost their lives in a fight that we must carry forth, to bring about a more equal and peaceful world that will come only with change."

Sammy B researched the stereotypes that affect the LGBTQ community. He made this jean jacket that highlights these stereotypes and encourages people to reconsider notions about any group of people.
Hannah's project took the problem of being indecisive, something that we can all relate to, and made a humorous artwork, that examines the different outcomes of a certain decision.
Sarah's project was about understanding Mental Health.
Specifically, she was interested in how invisible mental health issues can be to others not experiencing them. People may see you one way, but inside you could be feeling something very different without people realizing it.

Class Presentation:
"I researched the work of Marc Chagall because of his unique style and use metaphors in his paintings. His influence of cubism, surrealism, fauvism, and impressionism is shown by the bright color blocks and strong lines he uses creating fantastical images. I especially appreciate painting, I and the Village, a work that shows the balance of people and animals in a small village. He referenced his Jewish roots and childhood in Russia." - Emily Conrad

Students in the Advanced Art classes are giving presentations on artists. Lindsey Smith recently presented about William Kentridge, this is a bit of what she had to say about him and an example of his work:
"William Kentridge is a South African artist famous for him palimpsest-like drawings and animations, alluding to themes of apartheid and colonialism in South Africa. Using prints, collages and films, he brings to light very controversial issues that are still relevant today. "

Advanced Students looked at the contemporary artist Steve Mumford. He uses watercolor and inks(mediums often associated with softer subjects such as landscapes and flowery still lifes) to capture scenes from ongoing American wars much like the American painter Winslow Homer had done in the 19th century. With the advent of the camera, almost all documentation of war is photographed now. Steve Mumford travels on his own to these life threatening locations of war and brings a fresh look and humanity to war through his paintings.
His paintings contain thought provoking imagery and are beautifully rendered. Students were asked to consider his work when designing their own projects. Here is a link about Steve Mumford. Here is some of Steve Muford's work:

Studio in Art students are working on newspaper collages. In order to make a successful collage students must make an accurate line drawing of their chosen subject, and make determinations about the values in the portrait (the lightness or darkness). Next they have to find newspaper that matches these values and cut them in the right shapes and glue them. For an added conceptual component and bonus points students can try to find newspaper thats content reflects something about their subject. Here are some in progress shots:
February 14, 2012
Studio in Art 1 used magnifying glasses to examine the structure behind the textures we see. Then they tried to draw the blown-up textures in sample squares:

MYSTERY PAINTING REVEALED!
Studio in Art I and II students each got a small piece of a mystery painting. This project is a great way to practice matching colors and perfecting drawing skills. Each student had to recreate a larger version of a very small piece of the painting without knowing what the result would be,(no easy task). In the end we put their pieces together to create this collage painting.
The original painting was made by Henri Matisse in 1920. It is called "Woman with Exotic Plant". Matisse was a legendary French painter known for his use of color. Here is a link to see more Matisse.
